We hold our hands up to one of our readers who detected a bias in our weekly Unique Property Bulletins away from the south of Britain. This is mainly because there is more proverbial bang-for-your-buck the further the distance you look to buy a home from metropolitan areas. We do endeavour to have a broad geographical range, but have to plead guilty to a favouring for Scotland and Wales. So we shall endeavour to remedy this by featuring more unusual buildings in the South.

By special request from our reader – he also asked us to keep a lookout in our files for a former police station to buy in the Buckinghamshire, Berkshire and Oxfordshire areas. We are happy to oblige, and have this fine looking former police station to propose as a suitable candidate for questioning.

The property comprises a Listed Victorian police station with associated garaging and land to the rear. This building was constructed around 1892. Much of the original internal and external layout remains. There is existing car parking to the front and rear with side vehicular access. The overall site area is 2,140 m2 (0.53 acres) and the site slopes sharply from the north-west (main building location) to the south-east.

Pumping Station With Plans

For a utilitarian building this is quite an attractive little structure. It is also set within a residential areas, with views into the bargain. The current internal layout of the Pumping Station is a large open space of approximately 650 sq. ft., on the ground floor. The planning permission that has been granted provides for the installation of a new first floor which will raise the roof and increase the area of this property to around 1294 sq. ft.

Sefton Council have granted planning permission, reference N/2009/0180 for “the conversion of the former pump house to form one dwelling to include a first floor extension at the rear and to raise the roof height and new boundary treatments”.

Sounds like an interesting project for someone. Not too bad a price for a useful structure, land and planning consent all in place. Please note the importance of the quote “offers in the region of”.
