The Few

Air Control Tower Former RAF Condover (c) 2012 Parry Lowarch.

Not only did Sir Winston Churchill call them The Few, but as the years between World War 2 and current times progress, there are fewer of those who witnessed first hand what this tower represents.

The nearest we can get to it whilst reading this is to order a copy of the DVD film, Memphis Belle off of Ebay, or perhaps read a little ….

There are, fortunately some wonderfully restored museums preserving these understated, but exceptionally important, almost iconic utilitarian buildings …

Whilst the United kingdom looked like an island aircraft carrier in World War 2, due to there being that many airfields about, nowadays these towers are becoming increasingly rare.

This particular tower for sale at the former RAF Condover …

…. has had a LOT of preparatory regulation paperwork sorted out. Not just for the air tower restoration and change of use, but associated buildings and a reasonable chunk of land included in the sale.

The Same But Different

Former Hatston Aircraft Engine Test Building (c) 2012 Drever & Heddle.

We started this issue with a utilitarian box style of building at Shrewsbury, with a vital, life saving function. Here is another similar structure, again utilitarian in shape. However, whilst it is a similar genre, and had a slightly different use – for testing aircraft engines – it is situated a fair distance from the old Air Control Tower at RAF Condover in Shropshire. Our second (and third) listing is the former Hatston Aircraft Engine Test Building at the old Hatston Airfield on Orkney.

The property has been completely modernised and with a contemporary feel, into two apartments. The architect’s narrative is located here ….

The former Aircraft Engine Test Buildings have views over Kirkwall and surrounding countryside these properties have oil fired central heating; hard wood double glazing;. parking; and gardens.

Mill Pond House

Poland Mill (c) 2012 Hamptons International.

Poland Mill is a delightful Grade II listed Mill House with 15th Century origins and later additions in the Georgian period and then in the 1800’s. It is believed to have been used as a Hall with a great chamber and in the mid-18th Century the property is understood to have been owned by the Earl Tylney of Castlemaine. The house has evolved over the years and now provides graceful and well balanced accommodation presented to a high standard but retaining many classic period features. There are notable elegant reception rooms, 5 bedroom suites with modern stylish bathrooms, a lovely farmhouse kitchen with bespoke painted units and an Aga and a cosy sitting room/snug with a solid fuel burner. In our opinion it is a particularly elegant farmhouse and an outstanding example of its kind.

Poland Mill (c) 2012 Hamptons International.

The property is approached by a long private driveway giving access to Poland Farm and Whitewater Mill with a shingle driveway leading to a most attractive ford, period barn and outbuildings. The beautifully landscaped formal gardens enjoy a secluded outlook across neighbouring paddocks, which in turn gives access to the hard tennis court. The paddocks, with post and rail fencing, border 800 ft. of river frontage onto the chalk stream River Whitewater with fishing rights on both banks. This gives access to a small woodland area with access to a footpath across neighbouring countryside.
